The Palm Court - Drake Hotel - Chicago, IL

Afternoon tea at the Palm Court in the Drake Hotel will leave you feeling like you just took part in a little piece of history.

In nothing more is the English genius for domesticity more notably declared than in the institution of this festival-almost one may call it-of afternoon tea...the mere chink of cups and saucers tunes the mind to happy repose. ~George Gissing.

The Drake Hotel opened in 1920; and in 2014, joined the ranks of the Historic Hotels of America.  The building has intricate details and breathtaking décor that will leave you in awe.  From the hotel's exterior façade with the dragon lights to the velvet handrails, you'll feel like you are in a movie set.

To add to it's ambiance, the hotel boasts an afternoon tea that you must try at least once.  Make sure you make a reservation via OpenTable in advance to secure your time slot.  Try to get there a little early in hopes of grabbing a table close to the fountain in the center of the Palm Court.  Next to the fountain, you will find a harpist that, to our surprise, played Happy Birthday for the table next to ours.

The afternoon tea service includes what seems to be never-ending tea refills and extraordinary service.  The food includes rolls, lovely spreads, finger sandwiches, and a dessert selection.  Some of the tastes will excite your palette, others will leave you talking about their unique flavors.  If you finish your sandwiches, you can ask your server for seconds.  Sorry, only one round of desserts, though.

The Drake Hotel afternoon tea service tradition began in the 1920's for the social elite crowd and continues to this day.  There is not a spoken dress code, but you may want to pass on the jeans for this special visit.  You'll want to plan charming outfits for the little prince and princesses, as they are welcome to join you at a discounted cost and you'll want to snap some cute pics of the lovely kiddos during tea and around the luxurious hotel lobby.  Another must see at the hotel?  The women's powder room in the Palm Court, you'll open the door to something completely unexpected.
